EVANSTON, ILL. - Freshman Lauren Schwendimann (Tustin, Calif.) pitched a perfect game and Northwestern pounded out 15 hits in a 12-0 victory over No. 11 Michigan at Anderson Field. Schwendimann struck out four in throwing the first perfect game of her career. It was the Wildcats' first perfect game since Michele Hawkins blanked Loyola Marymount on March 22, 1994. With the win, Northwestern improves to 20-19 (8-4 Big Ten) while Michigan falls to 34-11-1 (11-4) with its worst Big Ten loss since Indiana defeated them, 12-0, in 1986.
NU jumped on Michigan pitcher Marie Barda early, scoring two runs in the first inning on a two-run double by Brooke Siebel (Brentwood, Tenn.). They added a single run in the third before touching reliever Jamie Gillies for three runs in the fourth. Alyson Schulz (San Diego, Calif.) opened the inning with a double down the leftfield line. After a sacrifice bunt and a walk put runners on the corners, Brittney Nelson (Chicago, Ill.), running at first, broke for second. The throw sailed into centerfield, allowing Schulz to score. Nelson continued to third on the play and scored when Christine Garza's throw to third was wild. Mikie Chambers (Country Club Hills, Ill.) drove in Brett Nakabayashi (Irvine, Calif.) with a double and NU hada 6-0 advantage. The 'Cats put the game away with six more runs in the fifth. RBI-singles from Cindy Muran (Newbury Park, Calif.) and Chambers drove in the first two runs and Erin Jancic (Houston, Texas) capped the inning with her second grand slam in 10 days, a drive over the wall in leftfield.
Northwestern returns to action on Fri., April 28 as they play host to the Ohio State Buckeyes for a 2 p.m. doubleheader at Anderson Field.
