EVANSTON, Ill. - Sophomore Erin Jancic (Houston, Texas/Alief Elsik) hit a solo home run in the third inning, and freshman Brie Brown (Nashville, Tenn./Harputh Hall) made it stand up as Northwestern knocked off No. 11 Michigan, 1-0.
Northwestern improves to 19-19 overall (7-4 Big Ten) while Michigan falls to 34-10-1 (11-3).
After stranding four runners in the first two innings, NU finally broke through on Jancic's line-drive homer over the centerfield fence off Michigan's Marissa Young. Brown (7-9) was in control throughout, allowing only infield singles in the third and sixth innings. Her only trouble spot came in the sixth, as Michigan put runners on first and second with only one out. However, she retired Stefanie Volpe on a fly ball to center and came back to strike out Young to end the threat. Brown walked three and fanned four in hurling her first career shutout.
Northwestern and Michigan will conclude their series Sunday afternoon at noon on Anderson Field.
