EVANSTON, Ill. - Three Northwestern errors led to four unearned runs for Indiana in the first inning and a late NU rally fell just short as the Hoosiers gained a 5-4 win over the 'Cats in Bloomington, Ind. Sunday afternoon.
After the first-inning trouble, the Wildcats began to peck away. Three consecutive two-out hits in the bottom of the first, the last an RBI double from Jenn Shull, put Northwestern on the board. The Wildcats then loaded the bases with nobody out in the sixth but could only manage one run, closing to 4-2.
After Indiana extended its lead to 5-2 with a run in the seventh, the 'Cats mustered one last charge. Erin Jancic (Houston, Texas) cracked a one-out double to get it started. After a fly out, Shull walked to move runners to first and second. An error on Hoosier shortstop Lauren Hendrix loaded the bases, and Alyson Schulz (San Diego, Calif.) followed with a base hit that plated Jancic and Shull, but Tami Jones (West Hills, Calif.) was thrown out at third base on the play to end the game.
Northwestern begins a stretch in which it plays 12 of the last 14 games at home this week. On Wednesday, the Wildcats host Loyola in a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. Next weekend, NU hosts Michigan State in a twinbill on Friday and then Michigan for single games on Saturday and Sunday.
