EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern University men's basketball coach Kevin O'Neill announced today the signing of Ed McCants (guard, 6-5, 180, Marion, Ohio/Marion Catholic) to a National Letter of Intent to play basketball at Northwestern beginning in the fall of 2000.
"We're very fortunate to get a player like Ed in the late signing period," said O'Neill. "He'll give us instant help to an already solid nucleus of returning players. He's a great athlete, an excellent shooter, and a better person."
McCants was the Associated Press Division IV Player of the Year in Ohio, and was named all-state and all-district. As a senior, he averaged 30.4 points, 10 rebounds and 3.5 steals while leading his team to a sectional championship. In addition, he played in the Ohio North-South All-Star game.
A McDonald's All-American nominee, McCants missed his junior season due to injury. As a sophomore, he was second team All-Ohio Division IV, first-team all-district and the county co-player of the year. He averaged 23.8 points, 12.5 rebounds and 2.2 steals.
McCants is his school's senior class president and a member of the honor roll. He chose Northwestern over Ohio State. His father, Brian, played basketball for UNC-Charlotte.
McCants joins USA Today honorable mention All-America honoree Jitim Young in the Wildcat 2000 recruiting class. The spring signing period lasts until May 15.
