EVANSTON, Ill. - One day after knocking off the No. 1 and No. 11 teams in the country, the Northwestern University softball team came back to Earth with a pair of losses to Long Beach State, 3-1 and 10-1.
The losses dropped the Wildcats to 9-16 overall, while Long Beach improved to 23-10.
In the first game, the 49ers shelled starter Brie Brown for four runs in the third inning, then tacked on five more in the fourth to win the game in five innings. Long Beach pounded out 15 hits, while Northwestern managed just three. The lone Wildcat run came in the third when Tami Jones singled home Gretchen Barnes.
The second game was a much closer affair. Northwestern drew first blood in the second inning when Brooke Siebel doubled to lead off the inning and scored when Alyson Schulz hit a two-out single.
Long Beach answered with two in the bottom half of the inning, then added another in the fourth to make the score 3-1. 49er pitcher Traci Hensel made it stand up, allowing just four Wildcat hits. For Northwestern, Laurie Schwendimann went the distance and allowed seven hits while striking out six.
Northwestern returns to the Midwest now, and the 'Cats are off until March 31 when they kick off the Big Ten season in Wisconsin for a doubleheader. That will be followed by single games at Minnesota on April 1-2.
