EVANSTON, ILL. - The 1999-2000 men's swimming and diving season put together a solid regular season, winning five of nine dual meets, before finishing ninth at the Big Ten Championships.
The highlight of the regular season came when the Wildcats hosted the Northwestern Invitational, a championship-style meet which featured nationally-ranked Arizona State (No. 9) and Southern Methodist (No. 15) along with Kansas.
Junior Steve Steketee paced Northwestern in the sprint freestyle events this year, posting team-best times in the 100 and 200 free. Senior Steve Harms capped off a stellar career by placing in the top nine in three events at the Big Ten Championships (1,650 free-6th, 500 freestyle-7th, 400 IM-9th). Harms was one of the most successful distance freestyle swimmers in Northwestern history and leaves as the school's record-holder in the 1,000 and 1,650 freestyle events.
Butterflier Kellan O'Connor gave NU fans a glimpse into the future with a strong freshman campaign. O'Connor shattered the school record in the 200 fly and finished fifth in that event at Big Tens, the highest individual finish for the Wildcats.
