EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern men's basketball team defeated Mississippi Valley State Saturday afternoon, 83-62, at Welsh-Ryan Arena. NU freshman Jitim Young scored 16 of his career-high 21 points in the first half and finished the game 7-of-10 from the field. Sophomore Winston Blake also had a career game, scoring 18 points, 15 of which came on five three-pointers.

Northwestern and the Delta Devils stayed even through the game's first six minutes, before the Wildcats went on an 11-0 run to take a 24-14 lead. That advantage swelled to 16 (40-24) thanks to the deep sharpshooting of Blake, who had all of his five treys in the first stanza, before the half ended with NU up, 43-31.

The 'Cats effectively ended the contest by starting the second half on a 17-3 run. Freshman Ed McCants hit back-to-back three's to put Northwestern up 26. NU led by as many as 29 in the final stanza.

As a team, the Wildcats shot 52 percent for the game (28-54), and 65 percent from beyond the arc (11-17). In addition, Northwestern had 25 assists on its 28 baskets, led by Collier Drayton who had eight against just three turnovers.

Northwestern is off until next Sunday, December 10, when they travel to Philadelphia to meet La Salle University. Game time for that contest is 1 p.m. central.
