EVANSTON, Ill. -
The Northwestern men's golf team won The Prestige at Desert Willow in Palm Desert, Calif. NU shot rounds of 291-281-283=855, putting them one stroke ahead of second-place Pepperdine (287-279-290=856). Northwestern's 5-under-par final round 283 was the day's best round, beating Pepperdine's final round by seven strokes. Desert Willow is a par-72, 7,056-yard course.
Individually, freshman Tom Johnson was NU's top finisher, placing third with rounds of 73-68-70=211 to finish 5-under-par. Johnson was just one stroke behind James Lee of Stanford (69-68-73=210) and Michael Beard (69-71-70=210) of Pepperdine. Lee defeated Beard in a playoff to win the title.
2000 Big Ten champion Luke Donald shot rounds of 72-69-71=212, finishing fifth for his third top-five finish in Northwestern's four fall tournaments.
Sophomore Scott Harrington fired a final round 72 to place 18th, while junior Chris Thayer finished the tourney with a closing round 70, placing him 22nd. Senior David Shaffer shot a three-round total of 222 to finish 29th, while T.C. Ford -- playing in his first collegiate tournament -- finished in 72nd.
