EVANSTON, Ill. - Roberto Bergerson hit a jumper along the baseline with 00.8 seconds left on the clock Monday night, giving the EA Sports All Stars a 74-73 win over Northwestern University in the Wildcats' first of two exhibitions this season.
Bergerson, who led EA Sports with 17 points on the night, got the ball along the left right sideline, drove to the baseline and floated in a jumper from 10 feet with a pair of Wildcat defenders guarding him tightly.
The loss came after a stirring comeback by the youthful Wildcats, who boast a roster with just two juniors, five sophomores and six freshmen. Down, 58-46, Northwestern went on an 11-2 run to cut the deficit to 60-57. EA scored six straight points, but Northwestern then reeled off 11 straight to take the lead at 68-66.
Former Cal standout Michael Gill hit a pair of free throws to tie the score, then Mark Mitchell hit a jumper to give EA a 70-68 lead. Aaron Jennings, a sophomore center, hit a three-pointer to give Northwestern a 73-72 lead, before Bergerson's heroics.
Jitim Young stood out in his first game wearing a Northwestern uniform. The freshman guard led all scorers with 21 points on 9-of-12 shooting. Ben Johnson had 16 points, while Jennings added 13 points and Winston Blake had 12 points and eight rebounds. Tavaras Hardy, the Wildcats' other starter, had nine points and snared a game-high 14 boards.
For EA -- which is 2-3 thus far in its college tour -- Bergerson was aided by Gill, who had 16 points. Chard Austin (13) and Courtney James (10) were also in double figures.
Northwestern will host another exhibition next Monday, playing Vasda USA at 7 p.m. in Welsh-Ryan Arena.
