EVANSTON, Ill. - Bill Carmody got his first coaching victory at Northwestern as the Wildcats used tough defense, the shooting of Winston Blake and the inspired play of freshman Jitim Young to beat Maryland-Eastern Shore 56-33 Wednesday night.
Northwestern (1-1) held UMES to 14 second-half points. The Wildcats broke out with a 15-4 second-half run featuring six points from the 6-foot-2 Young - all inside baskets - and a 3-pointer and jumper from Blake to open up a 40-23 lead.
Blake led the Wildcats with 15 points and Young had 13.
Maryland-Eastern Shore (0-1) was playing its first game under new head coach Thomas Trotter and shot just 26 percent (13-for-49). Andre Newson, from Aurora, Ill., led the Fighting Hawks with 14 points, all but two in the first half.
Northwestern, looking more comfortable in Carmody's offense since losing its opener to Arkansas-Little Rock last Saturday, jumped out to a 10-point first-half lead.
But Newson hit back-to-back baskets and Ben Roberts made a 3-pointer with six seconds left as the Fighting Hawks cut the lead to 25-19 at the half. Northwestern then took over in the opening 10 minutes of the second half.
Carmody was 92-25 in four years as head coach at Princeton before replacing Kevin O'Neill, who took off to become an assistant coach with the New York Knicks.
