Men's Swimming Leads NU Invitational After Day One

After the first day of competition in the Annual NU Invitational, the Men's Swimming and Diving team leads the field with 239 points, while the women trail top-ranked UCLA by 39 points.
Sophomore Mike Shue (Fort Meyers, Fla/Fort Meyers) paced the Wildcat men with a win in the 500 freestyle (4:32.79). Senior Steve Steketee (Golden Colo./Golden) also had a strong showing with a third- place finish in the 500 freestyle and was a member of two second-place relay teams (200 free, 400 medley). The `Cats placed five swimmers in the top ten of the 500 freestyle (Shue, Steketee, Shelby Clark, Dave Hersh, Dan Williams). Adam Kennedy took home a third-place finish in the 50 freestyle sprint, while Nick Barnes swam to a fifth-place showing. Todd Capen captured fouth in the 200 IM, and teammate Tony Swanson took home another fifth place for NU.
On the women's side, the Wildcats are playing catch-up to No. 1 ranked UCLA. Sophomore Rachel Johnson (Champaign, Ill/Centennial) led NU with a win in the 200 IM (2:04.27). Like the men, the women placed five swimmers in the top ten of the 500 freestyle (Erica Rose, Stephanie Cranston, Erin Swenson, Nicole Bernard, Vicky West). The women also picked up points in both the 200 freestyle relay and 400 medley relay with secon-place results. UCLA topped both the relays.
Tomorrow the action picks up again at 10 a.m. with more preliminary races. Finals will be held in the afternoon session which begins at 5 p.m. Finals will be held for the 200 medley reley, 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 back and 800 free relay. Diving will take place between sessions. The meet will conclude on Sunday with two more sessions.
