EVANSTON, Ill. - Led by a perfect night from the field by freshman Jitim Young, the Northwestern University men's basketball team defeated Yugoslavian team B.C. Masinac Monday night, 66-54, in exhibition action at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
Young, who led NU with 21 points last week in an exhibition loss to EA Sports All-Stars, was 6-of-6 from the field including a pair of 3-pointers. He also went 3-of-6 from the foul line for 17 points, topping all scorers on the night.
Northwestern never trailed in the game, charging out to a 10-4 lead to start the contest and never looking back. The lead opened to as much as 13 in the first half (23-10) before settling at 31-22 by halftime.
The lead hovered near the double-digit mark for most of the second half, before the Yugoslavians closed to within six at 50-44 when Bojan Gigic made a jumper with 6:27 to play. But NU responded with a 10-2 run, spurred by a technical foul on B.C. Masinac's Ljubodrag Bogavac.
Young -- who also had seven rebounds and four assists while turning the ball over just once -- was joined in double figures by Ben Johnson (13 points) and Winston Blake (10). The Wildcats played without Tavaras Hardy, who sat out the game with a hamstring injury.
For B.C. Masinac, Bogavac had 13 points and eight rebounds, while Andrej Djokic and Milos Pejic added 10 apiece.
Northwestern will host Arkansas-Little Rock Saturday to tip off the 2000-01 regular season. Tipoff time at Welsh-Ryan Arena is set for 7 p.m. central.
