Men's Swimming and Diving Wins Season Opener

EVANSTON, Ill. - EVANSTON, Ill. -- The Northwestern Men's Swimming and Diving squad opened their season with a 128-99 win against UW-Milwaukee Friday evening. The Wildcats dominated the pool as they won 12 of the 13 events.

The Wildcats were led by double winners Shelby Clark, Mark Hamming, Chris Meyer and Elliot Massuda. Clark opened his freshman season with victories in the 1000 freestyle (9:55.50) and 200 butterfly (1:54.00), while freshman teammate Mark Hamming recorded wins in the 200 Individual Medley (1:55.33) and 500 freestyle (4:50.08). Chris Meyer took the 200 breaststroke (2:09.62) and 200 backstroke (1:55.16). Elliot Massuda opened his diving season, posting wins in the 1-meter springboard (276.975) and 3-meter springboard (251.025) competitions.

Other winners for Northwestern were Dan Williams in the 200 freestyle (1:44.85), Steve Steketee in the 50 freestyle (21.26), Nick Barnes in the 100 freestyle (47.30) and the 400 Medley Relay (3:28.82), consisting of Jeff Blatnik, Meyer, Hamming and Williams.

Northwestern opens the Big Ten season tomorrow afternoon at the Norris Aquatics Center in Evanston, as it puts its 1-0 record against Indiana and Minnesota. Then on Sunday, the men round out their eventful weekend as both the men's and women's squads host the NU Relays.
