EVANSTON, Ill. - Kelli Wilson (Fayetteville, Ark./Fayetteville) scored in the 67th minute Friday afternoon, breaking a 1-1 deadlock and propelling the Northwestern women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Ohio State at Lakeside Field.
Shay Unterreiner (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) started the play with a corner kick that deflected off a defender to Aileen Guiney (Naperville, Ill./North). Guiney flicked the ball to Wilson, who blasted a 20-yard shot past OSU keeper Amber Barnes for the gamewinner.
NU started the game with momentum on their side, as Kristen Pearce (Morrison, Colo./Bear Creek) received a pass from Guiney and brought Barnes out to the top of the box. As Barnes slid to get to the ball, Pearce chipped it just over her diving effort, and the ball bounced into the net only five minutes into the game.
OSU took over the momentum for the rest of the half, finally scoring in the 32nd minute on a goal that was almost a carbon copy of Pearce's goal. OSU's Shelley Besson brought NU keeper Erin Ekeberg (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) to the top of the box and put the shot in from the left side.
Ekeberg tallied six saves for her third win on the season. Wilson led the team with six shots, while Guiney tallied two assists. Pearce, Janelle Harwood (Brighton, Mich./Brighton) and Katie Hertz (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) each had four shots for the Wildcats, who are now 3-9-1 overall, 2-5 in conference action.
