Women's Swimming Gains A Split in South Bend

EVANSTON, Ill. - The 11th-ranked Northwestern women?s swimming and diving team gained a split for the second straight weekend, defeating Rice (187-100) but losing to Notre Dame (158-141) in a double dual meet hosted by the Fighting Irish Friday night. The Wildcats moved to 3-4 overall with the results.
Despite the loss, NU had several overall winners Friday night. Amy Balcerzak won the 100-yard breaststroke with an NCAA ?B? standard (1:03.56), but was disqualified from the 200-yard breaststroke along with Kaisa Greenberg. Two other Wildcats gained ?B? standards en route to victories: Courtney Allen in the 50-yard freestyle (23.22) and Susannah Sample in the 200-yard backstroke (2:01.09). Sample also won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:52.78.
Other winners for NU included Hyun Soo Suh, who finished first in both the 500 freestyle (4:57.43) and 1,650 freestyle (16:50.47), Rachel Johnson in the 400 IM (4:26.48), and the Wildcats? 400 free relay team of Dominique Diezi, Brianne Fowles, Kelly Igoe and Sample (3:30.12).
The women will be on the road for a pair of dual meets next weekend, meeting Michigan Friday night in Ann Arbor (6 p.m.) and Ohio State on Saturday in Columbus (4 p.m.).
