Summary: An inspired performance from Butler kept the match close, but Northwestern poured on the offense throughout the second, racking up 31 shots, including 23 in the second half, en route to a 1-0 victory. The win was NU's eighth at home this year, as they close the season undefeated at home (8-0-1).
The defense won the game for NU today, allowing only seven shots, and virtually no sustained Butler offensive drives. Sophomore goalkeeper Erin Ekeberg (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) made several point-blank saves on Butler breakaways to preserve the shutout. On offense, Northwestern was relentless, hitting a crossbar of Butler's goal three times on second-half shots. Butler goalkeeper E.B. Larsen made 11 of her 13 saves in the second half. Sophomore defender Shay Unterreiner (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) scored NU's goal in the 38th minute, tapping in a rebound off a 20-foot shot by senior defender Kristen Palmer (Huntington Beach, Calif./Marina).
