EVANSTON, Ill. - The No. 18 Wildcats scored early when senior forward Dionna Latimer (Middleton, Ohio/Middleton) took a pass from senior midfielder Kathy Zimmerman (Burnsville, Minn./Burnsville) and scored from six yards out 11 minutes into the game. NU increased the lead when sophomore forward Brooke Bell (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton-Warrenville South) scored on an assist by sophomore defender Shay Unterreiner (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy), the defender who leads the team in scoring over the last three games.
After SMU got back into the game, Latimer scored the Wildcats' game-winning goal with less than 10 minutes remaining in regulation, dribbling past goalkeeper Erin Poole to score into an empty net.
Northwestern closes its regular season Sunday at Texas Christian. The Big Ten tournament will be played Nov. 6-8 in State College, Pa.
