UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Though they dominated possession and attacked consistently well in the opposing end Friday, the Wildcats came up short against No. 24 Michigan, 1-0 in the opening round of the Big Ten Championships, held in University Park, Pa. The Wolverines won on a 55th-minute breakaway goal by junior forward Amber Berendowsky, her 11th of the season.
Northwestern had five of the game's 12 shots amid a defensive struggle. Sophomore goalkeeper Erin Ekeberg (Palatine, Ill./Palatine), who came up big for the Wildcats several times, was credited with three saves. NU had numerous scoring chances in the game's waning stages, including four corner kicks in the game's final 90 seconds.
Two Big Ten matches played today were won by the lower seed. No. 11 Penn State (Seed 1) defeated Illinois (8) 1-0, Ohio State (7) upset Wisconsin (2) 1-0, and Indiana (3) won 2-2 (5-4 in penalty kicks) against Minnesota (6).
