Volleyball Wins Evanston Holiday Inn Wildcat Classic

EVANSTON, Ill. - Three Wildcat volleyball players posted 10 or more kills as Northwestern defeated Missouri, 3-0, to win its own Evanston Holiday Inn Wildcat Classic on Saturday night. The last time Northwestern won its own tournament was in 1994.
Junior middle blocker Kitty Owen and sophomore outside hitter Carmen Burbach each had 13 kills in the Missouri match. They were each named to the all-tournament team, along with senior setter Liz Renius and senior middle blocker Melissa Doan. Senior outside hitter Jessica Holloway was selected as the Classic's Most Valuable Player as she totaled 36 kills in four matches.
Missouri took a 4-3 lead early in the first game, and Northwestern did not take control of the game until 14-13. The 'Cats went on to win game one, 16-14, and would never look back with 15-3, 15-8 victories in the next two games. Missouri senior outside hitter Jodi Maune cranked out 11 kills against Northwestern en route to earning a spot on the all-tournament team. Sophomore middle blocker Annette Luyten was also chosen for the Tigers.
The University of Mississippi finished third this weekend with a 2-2 record. Lehigh was fourth (1-3), and Towson finished fifth (0-4).
Northwestern improves to 10-2 on the season. The Wildcats get ready for a four-match home stand as they open up their Big Ten schedule against Iowa on Saturday, September 25 at 7 p.m.
