Volleyball Upsets 23rd Ranked Ohio State

EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern upended No. 23 Ohio State with a 3-1 victory at Welsh-Ryan Arena. It was the first time the Wildcats defeated the Buckeyes since Nov. 19, 1988, as Ohio State entered the match with a series win streak of 18. It was also Northwesterns first triumph over a top-25 team in eight tries this season.
A total team effort catapulted the Cats to their 13th win of the season, tying last years win total. Senior outside hitter Jessica Holloway (Lafayette, Ind./McCutcheon) matched her season high with 17 kills and tallied a match and season-best 25 digs. Junior middle blocker Kitty Owen (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) matched her career-high of 15 kills. Sophomore outside hitter Carmen Burbach (Columbus, Neb./Scotus Central Catholic) contributed 13 kills and 14 digs for her team-leading eighth double-double of the year. Senior middle blocker Melissa Doan (Kalamazoo, Mich./Portage Northern) reached double figures in kills with 12, along with a team-high eight blocks. Finally, senior setter Liz Renius (Temperance, Mich./Bedford) recorded 57 assists and came up with eight important kills and 12 scrappy digs.
Ohio State had some great individual performances as well. Junior outside hitter Rosie Snow posted a match-high 28 kills and had 10 digs. Junior setter Jen Flynn registered a triple-double with 12 kills, 31 assists and 10 digs.
The match, which was televised by Fox Sports Chicago, will be aired on a tape-delayed basis on Sun., Oct. 25, beginning at 4 p.m. CT.
