EVANSTON, Ill. - Senior forward Dionna Latimer (Middleton, Ohio/Middleton) first goal of the season was one of her team's biggest, allowing Northwestern to upset previously undefeated and sixth-ranked Penn State. Latimer's goal capped off a second half offensive deluge by the Wildcats, the goal coming off a corner kick from senior defender Kristen Palmer (Huntington Beach, Calif./Marina) and a tip from freshman forward Katie Hertz (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg).
Northwestern dominated match play on both ends of the field. The Wildcats took the games final nine shots, keeping the Nittany Lions away from the NU net for the final two-thirds of the second half. Palmer and freshman Sara Bodine (St. Louis, Mo./Visitation Academy), playing in her first game as a defender, were overpowering in the backfield. ,p> On offense, sophomore forward Brooke Bell (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton-Warrenville) and junior forward Erica Westrich (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) controlled play in the middle. Only a strong effort by PSU's defense, ranked first in the Big Ten, and a brisk wind prevented NU from developing more scoring opportunities early.
