EVANSTON, Ill. -- Senior defender Kristen Palmer (Huntington Beach, Calif./Marina) and junior midfielder Erica Westrich (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) have been named to the 1998 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Great Lakes Region Second Team. It marks the second NSCAA honor NU has earned in a week. Previously Coach Marcia McDermott was named the 1998 NSCAA/adidas Women's College Regional Coach of the Year for the Great Lakes Region.

Both Palmer and Westrich had already been named members of the All-Big Ten first team. Westrich was the 1998 Big Ten Player of the Year. Palmer led the Wildcats in scoring this season with five goals and 11 assists. Westrich had three goals and an assist, including the game-winning goal in a 5-4 upset of No. 17 Baylor in the NCAA tournament second round.

Northwestern completed the 1998 season with a 16-5-1 record and a 6-3 regular season Big Ten record, its best marks ever. The Wildcats were ranked as high as No. 9 by the NSCAA this season, and finished the regular season at No. 20. The team made it to the third round of the NCAA tournament for the first time ever.
