EVANSTON, Ill. - Freshman forward Katie Hertz (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) helped Northwestern inch out a double overtime win in the waning minutes of this afternoon's game against Michigan State. The No. 19 Wildcats move to 1-0 in the Big Ten, avenging last year's 2-1 double overtime loss at East Lansing. Sophomore forward Brooke Bell (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton-Warrenville South) gained an assist on the goal. Bell had eight shots in today's game, including several close misses in the first half.
Junior midfielder Jessica Moorman (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) scored the Spartans' lone goal, and had seven shots on the afternoon. Michigan State accumulated 10 offsides calls for the game, stifling its attack most of the afternoon. Northwestern tallied 24 shots to MSU's 18, marking the third match this season that the Wildcats have had 20 or more shots. Northwestern faces its most difficult challenge yet Sunday when it takes on No. 10 Michigan at Lakeside Field at 1 p.m.
