EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern gained its first victory of the season on an overtime goal off the head of senior midfielder Sarah Joehl that defeated Tulane University 1-0. The win gives NU a 1-0-1 record for 1998. Tulane drops to 0-2.

Joehl's goal, coming off a corner kick from senior fullback Kristen Palmer, capped a game dominated by the Wildcat offense. Northwestern's 20-shot tally did not include two that found the back of the Tulane net. Both junior midfielder Erica Westrich and senior midfielder Kathy Zimmerman had goals disallowed by offside calls during the second half. Junior forward Christie Molitor led the Wildcats with four shots, while Joehl, Zimmerman, and senior forward Dionna Latimer had three apiece.

Bereft of substitutes and sporting an attack severely hobbled by injuries, the Green Wave's sole legitimate scoring opportunity came off a second half breakaway. Wildcat sophomore goalkeeper Erin Ekeberg had to dive to her right to stop a shot from Tulane freshman midfielder Siobhan Sullivan.
