Women's Soccer Coach Earns NSCAA/adidas Recognition

EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern Women's Soccer Coach Marcia McDermott has been named the 1998 NSCAA/adidas Women's College Regional Coach of the Year for the Great Lakes Region. She was one of six Division I women's coaches receiving a regional award.

McDermott just completed her fifth season as head coach at Northwestern. She led her team to a 16-5-1 record and a 6-3 mark in the Big Ten regular season, tied for third. The Wildcats have been ranked as high as No. 9 by the NSCAA this season, and finished the regular season at No. 20. The team made it to the third round of the NCAA tournament for the first time ever, defeating Evansville, 2-1, and No. 17 Baylor, 5-4, before losing to No. 3 Florida, 1-0. Randy Waldrum, the Baylor coach, and Becky Burleigh, the Florida coach were also selected for regional awards along with Patrick Farmer, the head coach at Big Ten champion Penn State.
