ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Northwestern volleyball team got its 14th win of the season with a 15-5, 7-15, 15-13, 15-13 victory over Purdue. It marks the most wins for a Wildcat volleyball team since the 1990 season when the squad finished 18-16. Tonight's victory was also the fourth Big Ten win for the 'Cats, tying last year's conference win total for the season.
Senior setter Liz Renius (Temperance, Mich./Bedford) dished out 51 assists and in the process, recorded her 1,000th assist of the season. It marks the third-straight season that Renius has reached the 1,000-assist plateau. She becomes only the second setter in school history to achieve the feat. The first person to do it was Jeanne Wohlberg (1992, 1993, 1994). Last year, Renius set the school's single season record with 1,373 helpers. With seven matches left this season, Renius now owns 1,040 assists for the season.
Sophomore outside hitter Carmen Burbach led the hitting attack for Northwestern with 18 kills. Senior outside hitter Jessica Holloway extended her double figure kill streak to nine matches with 11 kills on the night. She added 10 digs to register her ninth double-double of the season. Senior outside hitter Bev Krupa tallied a match-high 27 kills for Purdue.
Northwestern takes on No. 15-ranked Illinois tomorrow night. The Fighting Illini will be coming off an 11-15, 16-14, 11-15, 9-15 loss at Indiana suffered Friday night in Bloomington, Ind.
NEXT NORTHWESTERN MATCH: Sat., Nov. 7, vs. No. 15 Illinois, 7 p.m. at Welsh-Ryan Arena. "Pack the Place!" promotion will be held to try and set an NU attendance record. All tickets will be $1.
