Wildcats Softball Sweeps Indiana

EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern softball team (21-15) opened Big Ten play by sweeping a three-game series from Indiana this weekend in Bloomington. Saturdays doubleheader was postponed after one-half inning due to heavy rain, causing the teams to play nearly three full games on Sunday. The Wildcats have won six consecutive games and 12 of its last 13.
Northwestern won the first game, 4-1, behind sophomore pitcher Brooke Siebel. Siebel went the distance giving up one runs on three hits while striking out seven to earn her 14th victory of the season. Trailing 1-0, Northwestern scored two runs in the fourth and two more in the sixth to earn the victory. Freshman Erin Jancic went two-for-three and scored two runs to lead the attack. Junior shortstop Tami Jones also scored a pair of runs and stole three bases.
Siebel and freshman Kelly Campbell pushed the Wildcats past the Hoosiers in game two, 6-4. Campbell came on in relief in the third inning with Indiana up 4-1. She got out of the inning and shut the Hoosiers out on only two hits the rest of the game. Siebel launched her fourth home run of the year, a grand slam, in the bottom of the third to give the Wildcats a 5-4 lead. They added an insurance run in the fourth and held on for the win. Senior Lindsey Prezell added two doubles and scored a run for Northwestern.
Siebel was back on the mound in the series finale and the Wildcats broke a 1-1 tie with four runs in the fifth inning and went on to a 5-2 victory. Siebel and Prezell each went three-for-three and Prezell drove in a pair of runs in the big fifth inning. Prezell went 6-for-8 in the three games.
