Wildcats Edge St. Francis with Last-Second Shot

EVANSTON, Ill. (AP) - Julian Bonner's three-point shot with less than a second to play lifted Northwestern to a 69-66 victory night over St. Francis late Wednesday.
Trailing 66-60, Northwestern freshman guard David Newman hit consecutive three-point field goals to tie the game at 66. After St. Francis' Henry Lalane missed a jumper with 12 seconds left, the Wildcats raced down court.
Newman rimmed a jumper from the key and he tapped it out to Bonner on the right side, who hit in the winning shot.
Both teams played long ball. St. Francis (1-1) hit 11-of-28 three pointers, while Northwestern was 6-of-22.
A three-pointer from the left corner by Angel Santana at 15:17 of the second half gave St. Francis its first lead, 37-35.
Santana hit another three pointer at 12:30 for a 40-37 lead.
The Wildcats (2-1) countered with eight consecutive points and had a 45-40 lead at 10:25 after two free throws by Evan Eschmeyer. They led 50-46 when Lalane hit consecutive three pointers, the latter at 7:28 to give St. Francis a 52-50 lead.
The Terriers increased the lead to 61-55 at 3:55 on a layup by Solomon Abel.
Eschmeyer paced Northwestern with 28 points, Newman added 11. Bonner finished with eight points
St. Francis was led by Santana with 16 points, Lalane had 13, and Ray Minlend 11.
The game was the first between the schools.
