EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern softball team has won one of their first four games at the Pepsi-Cola Classic in Arlington, Texas.
The Wildcats dropped their opener, 2-1, to Northeast Louisiana on Friday. Northwesterns only run came on a squeeze bunt by senior Lindsey Prezell, scoring Tami Jones who had walked and stolen second. Sophomore Brooke Siebel pitched well, going all seven innings giving up two runs on four hits with five strikeouts. In game two on Friday, Northwestern defeated Stephen F. Austin, 5-4. Freshman Gretchen Barnes started the scoring with an RBI double in the second inning. Jenn Schull gave the Wildcats a 5-1 lead with a two-run double and they withstood a seventh inning rally from the Ladyjacks. Senior Jenni Beseres pitched 6 2/3 innings for the win and Siebel recorded the final out for her first save.
Northwestern finished pool play on Saturday by losing to No. 11 Oklahoma, 4-0, as Sooner pitcher Lana Moran threw a perfect game. After an error led to three unearned runs in the first inning, Siebel settled down and shut down the Sooners for the remainder of the game. In tournament play on Saturday, Northwestern dropped a tough, 3-2, decision to Illinois-Chicago. Siebels two-run triple in the fourth gave the Wildcats a 2-1 lead. They held the lead until the seventh, when the Flames turned a walk and three singles into a pair of runs.
Northwestern continues tournament play this afternoon against Southern Mississippi.
