EVANSTON, Ill. -- The Northwestern men's and women's tennis teams were selected to participate in this year's NCAA Regional Championships, announced today by the NCAA.
The 22nd-ranked Northwestern women's tennis team (18-4, 9-1 Big Ten) will play Illinois at Arizona State on Sat., May 15. The winner will take on either Arizona State or Northern Arizona on Sun., May 16.
The Northwestern and Illinois women split their two meetings this season. The Fighting Illini (13-10, 7-3 Big Ten) handed the Wildcats their only defeat during the Big Ten regular season (4-3) in Champaign on Feb. 28. NU avenged the loss in the Big Ten semifinals (4-1) last Saturday in East Lansing.
The NU men's team (11-12, 4-6 Big Ten) will also face Illinois on Sat., May 15, in Champaign. The Illinois men (25-3) are seeded No. 3 in the tournament. The winner of that match will take on Vanderbilt or Michigan.
On March 6, the Fighting Illini men defeated the Wildcats, 6-1, in Evanston. It was the only meeting between the two teams this season.
The NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Finals will be held May 20-28 at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Fla. The men's finals will be held May 21-29 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga.
