Wildcat Softball Opens Big Ten Season April 3

EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern softball team (18-15) opens Big Ten Conference play this weekend with a three-game series at Indiana. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday (1 p.m. CT) followed by a single game on Sunday (1 p.m. CT). The Wildcats lead the all-time series, 37-33, and have won four of the last five games against the Hoosiers, including a three-game sweep last season in Evanston.

Northwestern enters the conference season having won nine of its last 10 games and is currently on a three-game winning streak. Sophomore Brooke Siebel (Brentwood, Tenn./Father Ryan), last seasonis Big Ten Freshman of the Year, is hitting .483 (14-for-29) with two home runs and nine RBIs over the 10-game stretch. For the season, Siebel leads the team in RBIs (23) and is second in batting average (.333). On the mound, Siebel is 13-10 with a 2.18 ERA. She has pitched in 27 of Northwesternis 33 games and is scheduled to start game one on Saturday as well as the Sunday game.

Freshman centerfielder Erin Jancic (Houston, Texas/Alief Elsik) and junior second baseman Mikie Chambers (Country Club Hills, Ill./Hillcrest) have been key catalysts in the Wildcat attack. Jancic is hitting .417 (10-for-24) during her current eight-game hitting streak, and leads the team with a .351 batting average. Chambers is the main threat of a Northwestern running game that leads the Big Ten in stolen bases. Chambers leads the conference individual race with 24 stolen bases and leads the team with 24 runs scored.
