Volleyball Wins Season Opener

CHICAGO - Carmen Burbach tallied a team-high nine kills while Liz Renius and Jessica Holloway notched 11 digs apiece as the Wildcat volleyball team opened the 1998 season with a 15-3, 15-12, 15-6 win against Illinois-Chicago at the adidas Chicagoland Classic.

NU opened the match by committing just one error in game one while knocking 11 kills in 25 attempts. The 'Cats held UIC in that same game to a .000 hitting percentage (7K-7E-27 TA). The Flames fought back early in game two before the Wildcats pulled out the 15-12 decision before closing out the match with a three-game sweep.

Burbach hit .364 in the win, posting nine kills and just one error in 22 attempts. She also collected 10 digs and two block assists. Kitty Owen came off the bench to register eight kills and a team-high four block assists. Liz Renius added 24 assists and Sharon Fisk had three aces in the Wildcat victory.

NU will face Loyola-Chicago in Wednesday night's championship game at 7 p.m.
