Volleyball Splits A Pair in Texas

AUSTIN, Texas - The Northwestern women's volleyball team split its two matches at Saturday's Longhorn Invitational, defeating Southern Illinois 15-5, 15-13, 15-7, before falling to host Texas, 15-9, 15-13, 15-5.
Against the Salukis, the 'Cats hit .292 in game one, followed by a 34-kill performance in game two. Jessica Holloway paced NU with 17 kills while Carmen Burbach added 16 kills and a team-high 10 digs. Kitty Owen continued her superb play at the net, notching five blocks for the match. Sharon Fisk and Tanya Canak, who was seeing her first collegiate action, posted four blocks in the victory.
The Texas match, which immediately followed the SIU victory, began slow for the Wildcats as NU was outhit in game one, .345 to .105. The 'Cats righted the ship in game two, posting 23 kills to Texas' 17, but the Longhorns pulled out the game two victory and eventually the match. Holloway led the way with 11 kills and nine digs. Liz Renius added 36 assists while Owen, Renius and Melissa Doan blocked two balls apiece in the losing cause.
The Wildcats, now 3-1 on the season, conclude the Texas swing with a 3 p.m. match at Baylor on Sunday afternoon.
