Volleyball Defeats Baylor

WACO, Texas - Senior Melissa Doan had 13 kills, nine digs and a career-best nine blocks as the Wildcat volleyball team knocked off Baylor on Sunday afternoon, 13-15, 15-13, 15-10, 4-15, 15-13. The Wildcats improve to 4-1 while Baylor drops to 3-2.

The Wildcat defense was primarily responsible for the victory, holding the host Bears to a .130 hitting percentage. Baylor's percentage dropped from .190 in game one to .098 in game two and .041 in game three. The 'Cats pulled out the match in game five, forcing Baylor to hit -.040 for the deciding game.

Liz Renius tallied 53 assists and, in the process, became Northwestern's all-time leader with 3,639 assists. The previous mark of 3,634 was set by Jeanne Wohlberg (1991-94).

Kitty Owen continued her hot streak, posting five more blocks to go along with 15 kills. Sharon Fisk collected a team-high 20 kills as well as 12 digs, five blocks and a career-best .543 hitting percentage. Carmen Burbach also notched a double-double with 14 digs and 12 kills.

Northwestern travels to Gainesville, Fla., this weekend for the SunTrust Invitational. The 'Cats will face Florida, Kansas State and Pittsburgh in the tournament before returning home for the Evanston Holiday Inn Wildcat Classic on Sept. 18-19.
