Swimmers Post Double Win over Northern Illinois

EVANSTON, Ill. - In the final home meet of the year for both squads and the final dual meet of the season for the women, the Northwestern men's and women's swimming and diving teams defeated Northern Illinois by scores of 170-67 and 150.5-92.5, respectively. The men evened its overall record at 3-3, while the women, currently No. 12 in the nation, are now 7-2.
The men's team won every event but one, with six individuals swimming team-best times for the year junior Steve Harms (Maumee, Ohio/St. Francis de Sales) in the 1,000-yard freestyle (9:34.06), sophomore Steve Steketee (Golden, Colo./Golden) in the 200 freestyle (1:39.97), freshman Nick Barnes (Frankfort, Ind./Frankfort) in the 50 freestyle (21.32), sophomore Todd Capen (Lisle, Ill./Naperville North) in the 400 individual medley (4:01.65), junior Adam Conway (Grand Rapid, Mich./East Grand Rapids) in the 100 butterfly (51.84) and senior Brian Walters (Wyndmoor, Pa./William Penn Charter) in the 100 backstroke (49.17).
The women's team took first-place in 10 of the 11 swimming events. Three swimmers took first place in two events junior Brianna Fowles (McHenry, Ill./McHenry) in the 100 butterfly (58.42) and the 100 freestyle (52.63), junior Dominique Diezi (Zurich, Switzerland/Kantonsschule Stadelhofen) in the 200 freestyle (1:53.30) and the 100 backstroke (57.51) and senior Mary Beth Ellis (Lewes, Del./Lawrenceville Prep) in the 100 individual medley (59.79) and the 100 breaststroke (1:07.42).
The Northwestern men's team swims its final dual meet of the year Saturday, Feb. 6 at 2 p.m. at Iowa. The team will swim in the Big Ten Championships in Bloomington, Ind., Feb. 25-27. The women's team will compete in the Big Ten Championships in Minneapolis, Minn., Feb. 18-20.
