EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern head men's basketball coach Kevin O'Neill today announced the hiring of Steve Evans as assistant coach for the Wildcats. He replaces Brian Gregory, who resigned last month to take a position on the coaching staff at Michigan State.

"We are pleased to have Steve join our staff," said O'Neill. "We feel he is someone who can help improve our team both on and off the court."

Evans comes to Northwestern from Siena, where he spent three seasons (1996-99) as an assistant coach. Last month, the Saints defeated St. Peter's to win the 1999 MAAC Tournament title and earn a berth into the NCAA Tournament. Evans spent his first season at Siena under current Wildcat assistant coach Bob Beyer.

Prior to Siena, Evans spent two seasons (1994-96) as assistant coach at LeMoyne College in Syracuse, N.Y. During his tenure at LeMoyne, the Dolphins won the 1996 New England Collegiate Conference championship and a berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament.

The Rome, N.Y., native played collegiately at Union College in Schenectady, N.Y. He started four seasons at point guard and was named team captain as a senior. Evans earned his B.A. degree in American studies from Union in 1994.
