EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern softball team (8-6) opened play in the Troy Cox Classic by splitting a pair of games. The Wildcats dropped the opener, 3-2 in eight innings, to Texas Tech but rebounded to win the nightcap over Butler, 9-1.
Northwestern fell behind the Red Raiders, 2-0 after one inning, but freshman Gretchen Barnes (Flossmoor, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) cracked a two-run home run in the second to tie it. The score stayed that way until the top of the eighth inning, when Texas Tech broke the tie with a two-out base hit. Northwestern had the tying run at third in the bottom of the inning but was unable to capitalize. Senior Amanda Peterson (Los Alamitos, Calif./Los Alamitos) had two hits and a stolen base for Northwestern.
Against Butler, the Wildcats jumped out to an early lead on a RBI single by junior Tami Jones (West Hills, Calif./El Camino Real) in the first inning. After Butler tied the game in the top of the fourth, Northwestern answered in their half, scoring a pair of runs on a two-run single by Peterson. Sophomore Brooke Siebel (Brentwood, Tenn./Father Ryan) homered to start a three-run fifth for the Cats and senior Lindsey Prezell (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) sealed the victory with a three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth. Senior Jenni Beseres (Golden Valley, Minn./Armstrong) went the distance on the mound to record her second win of the season.
