Softball Drops Two to Minnesota

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Freshman third baseman Gretchen Barnes (Flossmoor, Ill./ Homewood-Flossmoor) hit her fourth home run of the season, but Minnesota used eight unearned runs to sweep a doubleheader from Northwestern this afternoon, 9-2 and 7-1. Minnesota improves to 38-15, 11-5 Big Ten. The Wildcats fall to 25-28, 6-10 Big Ten.

In game one, NU took an early 1-0 lead in the third inning on an RBI double by shortstop Tami Jones. Minnesota tied it in the top of the fourth, but NU recaptured the lead in the bottom half of the frame at 2-1 thanks to an RBI single by Jenn Shull. Minnesota took the lead for good in the sixth inning as right fielder Morgan Holden knocked a two-out, two-RBI single to give the Gophers a 3-2 lead. Minnesota added six runs in the top of the seventh for the 9-2 final margin. Steph Klaviter (17-7) picked up the win for UM while Brooke Siebel (18-16) took the loss for NU.

In game two, the Gophers opened a 4-0 lead in the third inning thanks to a grand slam by first baseman Angel Braden. Northwestern's lone run of the contest came in the top of the fifth inning as Barnes laced a 1-0 pitch off the left field pole for a solo homer. Heather Brown (11-1) earned the victory for Minnesota as Siebel (18-17) also took the loss in game two for the Wildcats.

Next up for the Wildcat softball team is a three-game weekend series at Ohio State on Sat.-Sun., May 1-2. The Cats and Buckeyes play a doubleheader Saturday followed by a single game Sunday.
