EVANSTON, Ill. -- Freshman forward Tavaras Hardy scored 16 points in his collegiate debut, but the Maine Black Bears (2-0) emerged victorious over the Wildcats (0-1), 69-57. Maine guard Andy Bedard had a game-high 31 points and five rebounds to lead the Black Bears.

NU jumped ahead in the first half, opening a nine-point margin at 26-17 with 2:44 remaining in the period. The 'Cats would take a 26-22 lead into the locker room.

Northwestern continued to hold the lead until 13:46 remaining in the second half, when Maine forward Colin Haynes hit a trey to put the Black Bears ahead, 37-35. Another Haynes three-pointer at 11:02 pushed Maine ahead 43-42, and the Black Bears would retain the lead for the remainder of the game.

After scoring only four points by halftime, Wildcat center Evan Eschmeyer rallied to finish with a double-double, scoring 15 points while adding a team-high 10 rebounds. Sean Wink's nine points came on three treys, and freshman guards David Newman and Steve Lepore had eight and six points, respectively.

Northwestern is back in action on Sat., Nov. 21, against the Oakland Grizzlies. Tipoff is 1 p.m. CST in Welsh-Ryan Arena.
