EVANSTON, Ill. - Jenn Shull (Junior/San Jose, Calif./Presentation) hit her first home run of the season, but Michigan State used a 12-hit attack to defeat Northwestern on Sunday, 9-2, and sweep the weekend series. MSU improves to 34-17, 8-6 Big Ten. The Wildcats fall to 25-26, 6-8 Big Ten.

The Spartans opened the game scoring three unearned runs in the top of the first inning off NU freshman hurler Kelly Campbell. MSU led 4-0 before Shull got the Wildcats on the board, knocking a line drive beyond the left field wall to cut the margin to 4-1. The Spartans scored at least one run in each of the first six innings, including solo homers in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.

NU's final run would come in the bottom of the fifth inning. Shortstop Tami Jones (Junior/West Hills, Calif./El Camino Real) knocked a one-out double to right-center field. She came home two batters later on an RBI single up the middle by center fielder Erin Jancic (Freshman/Houston, Texas/Alief Elsik).

MSU's Erica Strutz (24-10) earned the complete game victory, allowing four hits and two runs in seven innings. Campbell (3-3) took the loss for the Wildcats, allowing six hits and three earned runs in 1.1 innings. The final box score is attached.

Next up for the Wildcat softball team is a doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at 22nd-ranked DePaul. NU then hosts Minnesota on Wednesday at 2 p.m.
