EVANSTON, Ill. - Former University of North Carolina standout Nel Fettig has joined the Northwestern women's soccer coaching staff, head coach Marcia McDermott announced today.
"We're excited to have Nel join our staff," said McDermott. "She has had tremendous playing experience in collegiate soccer. She brings a great competitive spirit and will be an excellent addition as a coach and role model for our team."
A native of Fort Wayne, Ind., Fettig arrives at Northwestern after finishing the season with the Raleigh Wings, a member of the W-League's Elite Division in the United Systems of Independent Soccer Leagues (USISL). The W-League represents the highest level of women's professional soccer in the United States. On August 16, the Wings won the W-League's first ever championship game, finishing the season undefeated.
A 1998 graduate of North Carolina, Fettig finished third on her team in assists as the Tar Heels earned a 27-0-1 record and their third national championship during her career. Soccer News and Soccer Buzz named Fettig a first-team All-America defender each of the last two seasons. She was named to the Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Honor Roll three successive years.
