EVANSTON, Ill. - The No. 7 seed Northwestern men's tennis team fell to third-seeded Purdue, 4-2, in the semifinals of the Big Ten Championships, being held at the University of Michigan's Varsity Tennis Center. Purdue earned the first point of the match, winning two of the three doubles matches.
The Wildcats' two points came off victories from sophomore Derrick Nguyen (Darnestown, Md.) and freshman Jamie Sahara (Santa Maria, Calif.) at the No. 3 and No. 6 singles positions. That gave NU a 2-1 lead in team scoring. However, Purdue battled back to win the No. 1 and No. 5 singles, before Jason Marshall defeated Northwestern's Joost Hol (Santa Ana, Calif.) 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 at the No. 4 spot for the deciding point.
For senior Doug Bohaboy (Palo Alto, Calif.) at No. 1 singles, it marked the first postseason singles loss of his four-year career (16-1). The Boilermakers advance to take on top-seeded Illinois tomorrow at 1 p.m. in the championship tilt.
Northwestern's record stands at 11-12 overall. The 'Cats went 4-6 in the Big Ten during the regular season.
