Despite taking all but one singles match to a third set against Illinois, seeded No. 3 in the NCAA Tournament, Northwestern was eliminated, 4-0, in the tournament's opening round this afternoon. After losing a tightly contested doubles point, the Wildcats dropped a match by No. 2 Martin Bengtsson followed by see-saw battles by No. 3 Derrick Nguyen and No. 1 Doug Bohaboy. All three unfinished matches were tied at the time the event was suspended. Illinois advances to the tournament second round tomorrow to face Vanderbilt, who defeated Michigan, 4-3, in the first round at Illinois this morning.
