Men's Swimming finishes 28th at NCAA Meet

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Competing with just two swimmers, Northwestern's men's swimming team scored 16 points to finish in 28th place at the 1999 NCAA Championships in Indianapolis, Ind. Auburn came in first place in the three-day meet, which wrapped up today.
In the final day of competition, NU senior Brian Walters (Wyndmoor, Pa./William Penn Charter) shattered his personal best and the Northwestern school record by swimming a 1:42.70 in the preliminary round of the 200-yard backstroke competition. In the finals, he swam a 1:42.80 to take fourth place overall.
Sophomore Steve Steketee (Golden, Colo./Golden) swam a 44.52 in the 100-freestyle to take 29th place. Following are NU's complete results for the events:
100 freestyle - Steve Steketee, 29th - 44.52
200 freestyle - Steve Steketee, 16th (prelims) - 1:37.26 16th (finals) - 1:38.86
100 backstroke -Brian Walters, 18th - 48.51
200 backstroke -Brian Walters, 3rd (prelims) - 1:42.70 4th (finals) - 1:42.80
