Men's Swimmers Fall to Minnesota

EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern men's swimming team evened its dual meet record at 1-1 Saturday evening at Norris Aquatics Center. The Wildcats fell 178-117 to Minnesota in both teams' Big Ten opener.
After taking first place in both the 1000 free (sophomore Todd Capen) and the 200 free (sophomore Steve Steketee), Northwestern led Minnesota by one point after three events. The Wildcats went on to win four more events, including the meet-ending 400 freestyle relay. The team's top times improved in eight events from Friday evening's meet against Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
Among NU's notable runner-up finishes was freshman Chris Meyer, swimming in his first meet against a Big Ten school, who finished just over a second off the pace in the 200 breast. Below are Northwestern's first-place finishers:
Sophomore Todd Capen - 1,000 freestyle (9:37.94)
Sophomore Steve Steketee - 200 freestyle (1:41.76); 100 freestyle (46.59)
Senior Brian Walters - 200 backstroke (1:48.03)
Junior Steve Harms - 500 freestyle (4:39.51)
NU "A" Relay - 400 freestyle relay (3:06.29)
NU's men's and women's swimming teams will host nine other schools at the NU Relays Sunday at noon.
