EVANSTON, Ill. - Freshman guard David Newman scored 22 points, including six of his team's final nine, as Northwestern beat Furman 62-55 Saturday.

Furman's Paladins (2-2) rallied from a 43-31 deficit when Kyle Julius hit three consecutive three-pointers keyed an 11-0 run and the Wildcats' advantage was trimmed to 43-42.

The Wildcats (3-1) extended their lead to 53-48, then 6-foot-11 Evan Eschmeyer, Northwestern's leading rebounder and scorer, fouled out with 13 points while going for an offensive rebound. Daniel Quigley hit both free throws and Furman trailed 53-50.

Newman then hit a three-pointer and three free throws down the stretch.

In the first half, the Wildcats were up 24-11 when the Paladins went on an 8-2 run trimming the margin to 26-19.

Northwestern led 35-27 at the half.

Tavaras Hardy had 12 points for the Wildcats. Furman's leading scorer was Julius, who came off the bench to get 17 points. Daniel Quigley added 10. The Paladins' leading scorer Stanis Makshantsev was held to nine, seven below his average.
