EVANSTON, Ill. - The following are a few highlights from the Wildcat football media day, held Friday afternoon prior to the team's departure for Camp Kenosha. An audio clip also is available on the nusports.com audio mailbox. The link for that is located on the right hand column of the primary football page.

Coach Barnett is excited with the four practices that have been held for the freshmen. All three linebackers have looked good and Barnett indicated there are between four to six members of the freshman who have a good chance to play this season.

Wide receiver D'Wayne Bates has completely recovered from his broken leg, suffered in last year's season opener against Oklahoma.

Sophomore Gavin Hoffman and senior John McArthur seem to be the two leading men for the quarterback position. Coach Barnett feels that Hoffman came around during spring drills and was developing good work habits. McArthur, who sat out last season after transferring from Missouri, was making up a lot of ground and "plays like a warrior," which is earning the respect of the entire team. Hoffman will start off as the No. 1 quarterback going into camp, and the coaches are going to see if he can hold off McArthur for the starting job. Sophomore Nick Kreinbrink will be looked at as well at the quarterback position.

Fall camp for the 1998 Wildcats begins Sat., Aug. 15, in Kenosha, Wis. All practices are held at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside campus. Practices are free and open to the public. For those fans interested in attending a practice session, take I-94 to the Kenosha area (just north of the Illinois-Wisconsin border). Exit Highway E and travel approximately 4.9 miles on Highway E to Petrifying Spring Road. Go left on Petrifying Spring Road approximately 200 yards to the UW-Parkside athletic department. The football fields are located at the bottom of the hill, approximately 300 yards east of the athletic department.

1998 Camp Kenosha practice schedule (subject to change):
Aug. 15 - 9:15 a.m. to 10:45 a.m.; 4:05 p.m. to 5:35 p.m.
