EVANSTON, Ill. - Placekicker Brian Gowins' two field goals gave the Wildcats a 6-0 lead they sustained until the final minute of the first half, when Tai Streets scored on a 30-yard Tom Brady touchdown pass. The 'Cats continued to claw away, but fell just short for the third straight game, this time the score was 12-6.

Kicking on a wet field being pelted by incessant rain, Gowins connected on 29- and 40-yard field goals near the end of the first and second quarters. Bates made eight catches for 112 yards, including a 40-yard reception in the second quarter. It was Bates' third game of the season gaining 100 or more yards, and fifth gaining 96 or more.

For the fourth time of the season, Northwestern held its opponent to fewer than 15 points. Linebacker Barry Gardner led the Wildcats in tackles with 15, including one for loss, marking his sixth-consecutive game with 12 or more tackles. Cornerback Harold Blackmon supported with eight tackles and one pass broken up. Michigan fumbled five times in the game and was forced to punt on three occasions.

Quarterback Gavin Hoffman completed 13 of 23 passes in the game for 156 yards, out-passing Michigan by 17 yards. Running back Damien Anderson led NU in rushing with 60 yards.

Attendance for the game was a sellout, 47,130.
