EVANSTON, Ill. -- Senior middle blocker Melissa Doan (Kalamazoo, Mich./Portage Northern) of the Northwestern University volleyball team was selected to the GTE Academic All-District V second team. It is the first time she has received the honor.
Doan succeeds both in the classroom and on the volleyball court. As a learning disabilities major at Northwestern, she has a 3.33 grade point average and has twice been named Academic All-Big Ten. Athletically, she is enjoying her finest season yet, leading the Wildcats in hitting percentage (.292), service aces (33) and blocks (89). She ranks 15th in the Big Ten in hitting percentage and ninth in service aces. This year, Doan became the 14th player in NU history to join the 1,000-career kill club when she tallied 17 kills versus then No. 15 Illinois.
Northwestern (15-15, 5-13 Big Ten) plays its final two regular season matches this weekend at Penn State and Ohio State. The Wildcats square off with the No. 2-ranked Nittany Lions (28-0, 18-0) at 6:30 p.m. on Fri., Nov. 27. They meet the Buckeyes (14-13, 7-11) at 6 p.m. on Sat., Nov. 28.
