Men's Tennis Ends Fall Season

EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern men's tennis team ended the fall season this past weekend at the ITA Midwest Region Championships in Madison, Wis. Brad Erickson battled his way through the bracket to land in the championship match before falling to Iowa's Tyler Cleveland (7-6, 6-1).
Erickson and Joost Hol teamed up for the doubles competition and were defeated in the semifinals by Wisconsin's David Cheng and Scott Rutherford (6-2, 6-3).
In other singles action, Josh Axler fell in the second round to Notre Dame's Ryan Sachrie (6-2, 6-2) while Jackie Jenkins was defeated in the first round by Wisconsin's David Cheng (6-4, 3-6, 7-5). Hol received a bye for the first round but was defeated in the second by Notre Dame's Javier Toborga (6-2, 6-4).
The Wildcats competed in five tournaments this fall. To begin the season, the Wildcats competed at the Notre Dame Tom Fallon Invitational. Scott Kurtis won the D Singles Consolation draw to highlight the outing. Josh Axler led the team at the next competition as he took runnerup honors in the A Flight singles at the 1999 Boilermaker Classic. Russell Bennett and Kurtis were crowned as the B Flight Doubles champions at the Boilermaker Classic. The team then headed south to Austin, Texas, for the ITA All-America Pre-Qualifying Championships. Joost Hol advanced to the qualifying rounds of the Championships and was defeated in the quarterfinals by Vanderbilt's Andrew Nisker (2-6, 6-1, 6-4). The Wildcats headed east to Pennsylvania for the Penn Classic where Hol and Erickson took runnerup honors after falling to Carlson and Porter of Ohio State (8-5). The 'Cats ended the season at the ITA Region V Championships.
